A night on the town

I went out on Saturday night. I don’t think I’ve been out since my Uni days. A guy from work is getting married and this was his buck’s night.

Since I don’t drink, my first thought was to drive in but then I figured getting a park would be a pain. I didn’t feel like getting a taxi because they’re expensive so I settled on the bus. Of course, living in Logan means I have a crappy bus service out of peak hours. I drove up to Eight Mile Plains (the southern point of the Brisbane service area) and got a bus from there.

I didn’t know where I was going so I printed out instructions from the translink website. Unfortunately, the instructions weren’t all that helpful. They told me what service to catch from what location but left out some important details. The first was that I had to change platforms at a station (because the next service was heading in the opposite direction). Luckily I noticed this before it was too late. However, the instructions also failed to tell me the direction I had to walk to get from the busway station to the local station. Worse, there wasn’t a sign indicating the road names nearby at the busway station. By the time I found the bus stop I needed, the bus had already gone so I had to wait for the next one which made me late.

In my Uni days, I went out a few times with my hockey team. They loved me because I didn’t drink (designated driver) and I had access to a car with 11 seats. Of course, there’s only so much excitement you can get from the nightclub scene without being drunk or high. My morals also meant that the (typical?) activity of “picking up” wasn’t going to happen. Of course, going out with the hockey team got me chatting with Bree. We started waiting outside the clubs so we could talk. It wasn’t much later that I ditched the hockey team and started hanging out with Bree instead. We’ve just had our fifth anniversary.

So with that sort of history, I didn’t expect to hang around very long. Of course, the best laid plans are thrown aside and I ended up staying around until after midnight. We mainly stayed at an Irish pub. The live performer was actually a musician (a welcome change from the usual garbage you see from live performers) which made the whole thing much more enjoyable. Unfortunately I can’t go into the details of what happened or to say where else we went because “what goes on tour stays on tour”.

So sometime after midnight I came home. One of the other guys was getting a taxi to his house which was near a busway station so I went with him. Unfortunately, I got to the station with a 40 minute wait for the next bus. Worse, when the bus came it had one of the other guys on it. Apparently the night link service goes a slightly different route to the day service. If I’d been planning on staying out so late I would have found that out.
