I'm looking for a game (Worlds Without Words) April 15, 2008
Posted by a1291762 in : computers , add a commentSo, a long, long time ago I played this game on my BBC computer at home. It was called Worlds Without Words and I’ve since found out it was made by 4Mation. I remember it being a good game but it was so long ago I can’t be sure my mind isn’t playing tricks on me.
No problems I thought, Google will find it. Except that it didn’t. Apparently the game died off before the Internet really existed so Google has virtually no trace of it. I found a mere 2 mentions, both in research papers. That’s what led me to 4Mation and more importantly, their Australian distributor where I met a guy that not only knew the game, he’d played it. Ultimately though my search proved fruitless. The people at 4Mation apparently destroyed their old BBC games years ago (except for Granny’s Garden, which they still sell today).
That leaves me with virtually nothing.
The game (at least the version we had) came on a 3.5 inch floppy disk so I’d be kind of surprised to find a physical copy still in working order (not to mention the difficulty of finding a working BBC to read it on). Searches through the BBC fan/ROM sites has revealed nothing (though I did turn up some other BBC games we had). At this point I’d be very surprised if I ever saw this game again and that makes me sad.
In the interests of getting this in front of anyone trying to find the game I’ll describe what I can remember. The box was black with a purple alien (of the cute and furry variety) and some alien landscape. The game was on a disk and there was also a cassette tape with strange music on it. The game itself was more a collection of mini-games. Some of the games I remember were the robot builder, where you built a robot out of 3 or 4 parts and only the right parts would let the robot get through the obstacle course. I remember some game a bit like a slider puzzle (though perhaps the rows and columns wrapped around). There was some bit where you walk around with an alien (the one from the box?), perhaps that was how you got to the mini-games. Gee. That’s all I can remember and it’s not much to go on.
As near as I can tell, the computer we had was a BBC Master Compact, it had the separate 3.5 inch drive and lacked a tape or 5.25 inch drive. According to Wikipedia that means any games for it will be extremely rare. Damn!
I’m hoping someone remembers this game and has a copy stashed away somewhere. I’d even be willing to pay for a copy. Heck, I’d even be happy just to see some screen shots, to see if the game matches my memory of it.
Something's up with Isaac April 4, 2008
Posted by a1291762 in : isaac , add a commentJust as with Emily, it seems something is up with Isaac. About the same age, same symptoms (even to fear of the pool).
He did a wee on the potty yesterday but didn’t notice that Bree had taken the bowl out. Needless to say there was a big puddle on the floor and Isaac was most upset.
